What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Limitations:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Patient was slightly more fussy after receiving vaccines in the morning but overall well immediately... Patient was slightly more fussy after receiving vaccines in the morning but overall well immediately afterwards. Took a nap at 4:30pm for 2 h (which is longer than usual for her). Woke up at 6:30pm, fed at 6:45pm and around 7:30pm her family member was holding her she she became very sleepy/lethargic. Looked as if she was falling asleep but was noticed by family to have grey discoloration of her skin. Her lips looked pale and she spit up a little but then then projectile vomited. After that again looked sleepy and her eyes were closing. She then projectile vomited again and her eyes rolled back in her head. For about 20 minutes she was going in and out of consciousness - blue lips, grey skin, falling asleep. EMS arrived and once in the ambulance she started to wake up more. About 5-10min after ambulance arrival she was moving around, gripping, smiling. In ambulance looked a little dazed and fell asleep again but woke up when stimulated. She was back to her normal baseline by the time she got to ER. She was admitted and had a 24 hour VEEG which was normal. Diagnosed with a BRUE and discharged home and was well since that time. More

My upper left arm, where I received the Pneumo Conjugate injection, was very sore. About 2 days late... My upper left arm, where I received the Pneumo Conjugate injection, was very sore. About 2 days later, redness, heat and itchiness developed. The red patch spread from the injection site near my shoulder down the front and inside of my arm almost to the elbow. For several days I applied a topical analgesic cream several times throughout the day. It helped somewhat, but not enough. Finally I gave up on that and started slathering the area with Calamine Lotion. I applied that generally twice during the day, as well as before bedtime. This is day 12 and the redness, heat and itchiness have diminished substantially. I anticipate that in a couple days I'll quit using Calamine Lotion and all will be dandy. Somehow I inadvertently uploaded only a partially completed form earlier today. Please scrap that. With luck this one will upload fully and properly with all the necessary info. Patient had vaccine 09/23/25. She was seen at the office on 09/29/2025 by Dr.- "Patient is a 56... Patient had vaccine 09/23/25. She was seen at the office on 09/29/2025 by Dr.- "Patient is a 56 year old female who presents with neck stiffness and rash following a flu vaccine. She received a flu vaccine at pharmacy on Tuesday. That night, she developed a low-grade fever and a headache localized to the left side of her head. She has a history of headaches but no previous migraines. The following day, she experienced neck stiffness and pain, making it difficult to turn her head. The symptoms persisted into Thursday, with the headache becoming more severe and extending between her shoulder blades, causing significant discomfort. She described the pain as feeling like 'someone needed to punch me right there just to relieve the pressure.' She managed her symptoms with alternating doses of Tylenol and Advil from Tuesday until Friday morning. On Friday, she noticed a discoloration from underneath her breast around the left side, which was not itchy and was discovered after a shower. Her fever resolved over the last couple of days. No chills or sweats, although she experiences menopausal symptoms, which include sweating. No photophobia. She has been informed of elevated blood pressure, which she states has never been high before, and she is concerned about the implications for her job. Assessment & Plan Myositis, neck and back muscle inflammation, and acute neck pain following influenza vaccination Acute myositis and muscle inflammation in the neck and back following influenza vaccination, with significant torticollis and muscle pain. Symptoms likely due to inflammatory response to the vaccine or reactivation from previous COVID vaccinations. Symptoms include severe neck stiffness and pain radiating between shoulder blades. - Order blood tests to assess inflammation markers - Prescribe Flexeril for muscle relaxation - Prescribe dexamethasone to reduce inflammation - Advise against taking Flexeril before flying Headache following influenza vaccination Headache localized to the left side of the head following influenza vaccination, persistent over several days. Likely related to the inflammatory response from the vaccine. - Prescribe Fioricet for headache management Allergic rash following influenza vaccination Development of a non-itchy rash on the left side of the body following influenza vaccination, likely an allergic reaction to the vaccine. Rash is not causing significant discomfort. - Prescribe dexamethasone to address the rash Elevated blood pressure secondary to acute illness Elevated blood pressure likely secondary to stress and discomfort from acute illness and inflammation. Not a chronic issue as blood pressure has been normal in the past. Expected to resolve as inflammation decreases. - Reassess blood pressure on follow-up visit tests ordered CBC, CMP< Creatine kinase, and lipid panel." She then went to ER on 09/29/25 for worsening symptoms. "Patient 56-year-old female with PMH as above here for evaluation of chills as well as neck pain and headaches that the patient has been experiencing over the past 6 days since receiving her influenza vaccination. She saw her primary care physician yesterday and was diagnosed with a reaction to the influenza vaccine. She was given a prescription for prednisone but did not take it yet. She was also given a prescription for Flexeril which did not help her with the pain. Physical exam as above. Labs reviewed are grossly unremarkable and reassuring. She is noted to have a slight elevation in her ESR and CRP levels which represents inflammation. White blood cell count is normal. COVID-19 testing was negative. Urinalysis was questionable for urinary tract infection. When the patient was questioned, she did not has been a urinary tract infection symptoms. Urine culture has been performed by the lab and we will contact the patient back if the results are positive for a bacteria that will require antibiotics for treatment. CT angiogram of the head and neck performed showed no evidence of any acute intracranial/vascular pathology. The patient has been reassured by the negative workup. She felt better with the medications that she received here. I has been discontinued her Flexeril and has been given her a prescription for tizanidine to help her with the neck pain. She does not have any signs or symptoms to suggest that she has meningitis/encephalitis at this time. The patient feels comfortable being discharged home. She has been instructed take the prednisolone that she was prescribed. Patient will follow up with PCP and return if any worsening symptoms. Amenable to this plan and appreciative of care delivered. Amount and/or Complexity of Data Reviewed: Labs: ordered and details documented in ED Course Radiology: ordered, independent interpretation and details documented in ED Course Details: I have independently interpreted the patient's CT angiogram of the head and neck and see no evidence of any acute intracranial/vascular pathology. " Then symptoms worsened again- on 10/06/25 "Good Morning Dr., I had been feeling much better after my reaction to the flu vaccine and all seemed to be going fine but on Thursday, I began having a dull headache on the left side of my head again with random "electrical shocks" to my ear drum and down the back of my head. Not excruciating, but annoying and a constant dull ache just below my rib cage on the left side of my back. I was supposed to fly on Saturday but I did a telecom appointment and Dr. advised I go back on steroids and start with the muscle relaxers and Zyrtec again, so I called out for my flight. He prescribed me a course of Prednisone and I have been taking all the meds he recommended.
