What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)
  • Legally accessible - Available to researchers, media, and the general public under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Symptoms of fatigue, muscle weakness, and headache prompted an urgent care visit on October 15th. Patient received IV fluids and was sent home. She returned the next day with worsening symptoms (new onset leg numbness), and previous day's labwork showed elevated liver enzymes and an enlarged spleen. She was sent to (withheld) Medical Center in (withheld) on October 19th due to inability to walk, chest pain, and slurred speech. She received IV IG from 10/20-10/24 with suspicion of GBS. She was transferred to (withheld) on November 3rd to receive plasmapheresis. Patient is currently receiving plasmapheresis therapy. She is currently on hospital stay day #25. More

Patient called the pharmacy and spoke with the pharmacist on duty. Per patient over-the-phone, she was given the Capvaxive in her right arm and Flublok in her left arm. On Wednesday (11/12/25) the patient was fine, but on Thursday morning around 6:30am, she said her right arm was red and swollen, she had a cough, and the rest of her body was stiff with aches. Her right arm was fine. She ate some soup, took a couple of OTC APAP tablets, and OTC Nyquil for her cough and went back to bed. She also c/o being sweaty. Today, she says her arm is still red, warm-to-the touch, and still is fever-free. I consulted her to continue to monitor her arm. I also encouraged her to take some Bendaryl OTC (oral) and use a cool compress to help with the reaction. I encouraged her to contact her PCP and/or urgent care if her arm or sxs get worse. I also let patient know we would reach out to her PCP with this information. Patient asked if she could use Zyrtec OTC. I told her that was fine if that was all she had, but recommended Benadryl for allergic reactions. She also asked if she could use topical Benadryl which I said was fine, but definitely take an oral antihistamine, at least. More

It started mildly but quickly went up and down my spine and swirled around my body. I got up to put on a second pair of pajamas, so I was wearing two. I turned my heated blanket all the way up. And added another blanket on top. I shivered with the chills til about 10:00 am. By 10: 30 am, the subsequent headache was so bad it was explosive. I took two 500mg Tylenol, and two 400 mg ibuprofen. There was no change in the pain, so I took another dose of the same at 1:00 pm. The headache was somewhat manageable til 5:00 pm. I took another dose of the same, and went to bed. I slept til 3:00 am. When I woke up at that time, i felt much better. Since November 8th, i wake up with a severe e enough headache each morning to take the tylenol-ibuprofen regamine. I will mark "yes" on #20 but only because I am somewhat recovered. More
