What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

The patient is a 29 yo female healthcare worker with a hx anxiety requests evaluation and recommenda... The patient is a 29 yo female healthcare worker with a hx anxiety requests evaluation and recommendations due to AEFI after mandatory receipt of IIV #2 Jan 15, 2025 lot #AW1606B. She describes vaccinator error of initial selection of too low a site followed by overcorrection to atypically high, which was the site of antigen receipt followed by onset day 2 of left shoulder progressing pain, tenderness over her shoulder, affecting function, and paresthesia s. She also reports two episodes (2 weeks and 4 months post-receipt) of weakness, diffuse arthralgias, myalgias, fatigue and difficulty walking, muscle fasciculations, legs, vision field disturbance and tinnitus all which resolved in 7-10 days. The MRI 19 FEB (day 34 post- receipt) report states possible minimal long heads biceps tenosynovitis or subdeltoid bursitis, supporting post-immunization arthropathy. For her shoulder pain and injection arm symptoms: The description of vaccinator error, the timing of onset, and local paresthesia s are consistent with Post-Immunization Arthropathy (aka Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration [SIRVA], which is a medicolegal term). The differential dx would include other orthopedic etiologies including impingement syndrome, rotator cuff injury, biceps tendonitis, osteoarthritis or adhesive capsulitis, although these have all be documented as having been associated with SIRVA. Brachial neuritis is a consideration, but her description would be atypical (typical is severe pain followed by resolution and then onset of paresis/paralysis) and her neuro exam is normal, thus this is not likely. Her description is not suggestive of GBS. Post immunization arthropathy is thought to be a reaction to an unintentional injection of the vaccine into synovial tissues resulting in a robust immune-mediated inflammatory reaction to the musculoskeletal structures of the shoulder (tendons, ligaments, bursa, etc). Onset is within 48 hours after an injection. S/S include pain, decreased ROM, altered sensation, weakness. A description of too high is common. She received appropriate treatment, responded to PT and symptoms are now resolved. Concerning the systemic complaints of diffuse arthralgias, myalgias, fatigue, vision changes, tinnitus, leg numbness etc: Robust systemic responses to vaccine can produce arthralgias, myalgias, fatigue, however with an inactivated vaccine, onset is typically within a few days, has only for a few days duration and would not demonstrate recurrence four months later and does not explain her other symptoms. It is most likely a coincident event. Immune stimulation through natural infection or vaccines, can unmask an underlying condition, however her symptoms are nonspecific and currently resolved. I do not recommend further evaluation at this time and it does not support vaccine exemption. Should she have recurrence, she should f/u with PCP. Instruction was given for Future PIA Prevention as follows: -Both recipient and vaccinator should be at the same level (both seated, both standing) -Place your hand on your hip to rotate your elbow out. -Use of the appropriate needle length (most flu drives would use the correct needle for your height and weight). -Use of the thigh muscle as an alternative site. (Vaccines are not given in the gluteal muscles). -Avoid use of the left shoulder for vaccine receipt in the future. -Neither AEFI is a contraindication or precaution to future vaccine receipt. She should receive all vaccines as indicated per mandatory employment requirements and per ACIP recommendation for her personal health. More

The vaccine was administered by the graduate intern pharmacist. The vaccine was administered in her right arm. Pt waiting 30 minutes in the pharmacy after administration to ensure no adverse responses. She also shopped for groceries following the 30 minute wait period. Pt when home and noticed a welt at the site of administration. As the night progressed the pt realized that the redness expanded and encompassed an area much larger than the injection site. By the next day the redness covered the majority of the upper arm . She went to urgent care for assistance and was prescribed 7 days of oral steroids. The rash and redness lasted for 7 days. Pt came to the pharmacy about 3 weeks later to discuss the matter with the pharmacist and receive the bandaid used during the vaccine administration. 1st shot was 4/13/2021 & second shot was 5/11/2021; Adverse effects: Two issues occurred after... 1st shot was 4/13/2021 & second shot was 5/11/2021; Adverse effects: Two issues occurred after the shots: 1) There were long term pain in both arms at site of each injection. Treatment - no further COVID-19 shots and began to tak "Chela-Nox" to detox the effects of the shots. Outcome: pain is seldom felt anymore. 2) MacTel, or macular telangiectasia: Within three months of the second dose, i began to experience issues with both eyes. (redacted) Eye Institute on 8/26/2021 diagnosed that i had developed MacTel, or macular telangiectasia. Treatment - no further COVID-19 shots and began to take AREDS twice a day. Outcomes: stabilized but not going away at this time. More

Pt was given an extra dose of MenQuadfi instead of Bexero. No adverse effects or reactions observed ... Pt was given an extra dose of MenQuadfi instead of Bexero. No adverse effects or reactions observed or noted.Pt was requesting a Meningococcal B vaccine for college. Patient was consulted for the Mengicoccal B vaccine. I highlighted the Mengicoccal B space on the CIS and entered the date after patient received her vaccine in the Meningococcal B space on the CIS. I accidently wrote MenACWY on the consent from and this resulted in the patient receiving the MenACWY. I notified the on-call provider about the patient receiving the extra dose of MenACWY. She advised that the patient would not have any adverse reactions to the extra dose and it would be safe if the patient came back and received the correct Meningococcal B vaccine. The patient was notified via phone call with no answer. The patient was then notified via text and she call me back. She gave verbal understanding about the incident and decided to come back and receive the correct vaccine. Pt did return and received the Meningococcal B vaccine. Pt was monitored and no noted reactions were observed. She received education regarding any adverse and urgent side effects and who to notify in case of an emergency. Pt gave verbal understanding.
