What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Patient was given the Moderna COVID-19 2024-2025 booster in her home on 5/30/25 by the Health Department as one of our home bound resident's. This was her 6th Moderna COVID-19 vaccine and 2nd given by us with no reactions until after this last dose on 5/30/25. Patient received the vaccine at approximately 12pm on 5/30/25 in her right deltoid. Nursing staff waited approximately 15 min to observe for any adverse effects, none noted. Patient explained that when she woke up at approximately 6am on Saturday 5/31/25 her left leg felt tight and when she looked down it was swollen. She continued that when she looked in the mirror after getting up, they area around her eye brows looked swollen as well. She notified me, RN a nurse at the Health Department on 6/3/25. She experienced no other symptoms and explained that the swelling was going down. She denies shortness or breath or pain. She was instructed to call her physician and explain the above, she understood and agreed. This writer then went out to her house to assess the left leg swelling. Upon assessment her left leg was noted to have slight edema, non pitting, positive pedal pulses, denies pain, no redness or dusky discoloration noted, skin temperature WNL. Encouraged to keep leg elevated to decrease edema, she understood and agreed. No further swelling noted around her eye brows. Follow up done on 6/4/25, she feels well again today and has a follow up appointment with her Primary Care Physician on Friday 6/6/25 and report back then. More

Upon review, it was noted that an unvaccinated person would receive 2 doses, separated by 4 to 8 weeks. Dose #2 of Moderna was administered, 6 weeks after dose #1. Upon entering the vaccination dose into vaccination database, it was noted the dose was possibly administered too early. Upon further review of the CDC Interim Considerations, the 6 months to 4-year-old schedule was used as a reference, not the age 12 to 64 schedule. Ages 12 to 64, only require 1 dose for an unvaccinated person. Patient was notified of the error on 5/28/2025. On 5/29/2025 patient noted to have expected side effects of fever, body aches and sore arm, similar to dose #1. These symptoms resolved within 3 days.
