What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Patient received flu and COVID vaccination on 9/16/25 and soon developed bruising on both arms and l... Patient received flu and COVID vaccination on 9/16/25 and soon developed bruising on both arms and left leg. She presented to an ED on 9/29/25 in which they noted "Ecchymosis noted to bilateral upper extremities, no palpable cephalohematoma or fluctuance. Ecchymosis noted to entirety of left lower extremity, various stages of healing." Her hemoglobin was 7.7 after previously being in the 11's but no coagulation test was sent. She had an ultrasound of left leg which was negative and so she was discharged with outpatient follow up. The patient then saw her PCP on 10/3/25 who again noted significant bruising "Diffuse areas of ecchymosis most notable of left LE, and of b/l UE" (including photos) and repeated her labs and found her hgb to be at 6.5 so sent her to the ED on 10/4/25. There she had coag testing which showed normal PT of 11 but aPTT of 72, Factor VIII level of <1 and a mixing study showing incomplete correction with mixing and prolongation of aPTT after 1hr of incubation consistent with an inhibitor. Inhibitor testing was positive for a FVIII inhibitor with a Bethesda Unit of 33. The patient was started on porcine FVIII initially with transition to emicizumab once a FVIII inhibitor was identified. She was also started on prednisone 1mg/kg and rituximab 375mg/m2 x4 weekly doses. She was discharged after 12 days on 10/17 and has remained outpatient on a prednisone taper with completion of weekly rituximab treatments. Repeat coag studies have been normal but repeat FVIII testing is pending. More

Began with itching and burning on my left arm (injected arm), the feeling wound up spreading to my o... Began with itching and burning on my left arm (injected arm), the feeling wound up spreading to my other arm, and eventually the rest of my body. I was sent to the emergency room, where I soon began to get tingling in my feet, which spread up my legs, and into my hands and up into my arms, and dizziness. Was given Benadryl, prednisone, and Tylenol in the ER. The next day (10/9), the symptoms persisted, so I went to urgent care. I went to my primary care on 10/14 after no relief, and was told to go back to the ER to be admitted. I was in the hospital the night of 10/14, and didn?t leave until the night of 10/17. After labs, a spinal puncture, CT scan and MRI, they are still unsure of a diagnosis. I will be having an outpatient EMG done. More

Patient?s parents signed consent for the patient to receive TDAP, MENQUADFI, HPV, and the INLUENZA vaccine at the school vaccine clinic. Pt received all four vaccines at the school. Pt was given HPV and INFLUENZA in the left arm. TDAP and MENQUADFI were placed in the right arm. Vaccinations were prepped by RN and given by paramedic with EMS. Father called on 10/29/2025 reporting that his daughter was still complaining of pain in her left arm. Father denies any swelling or redness in the arm, just that the daughter is still complaining of pain in her left arm. RN informed parent that some discomfort was normal after receiving vaccines, specifically the HPV vaccine. RN informed parent that it could be exasperated by having the two vaccines in one arm. RN gave father instructions to follow up with pediatrician if still concerned. For pain, RN instructed father that he can do ice packs/warm pads for pain. RN encouraged the father to have the patient move the arm frequently. Tylenol and motrin for pain and discomfort can be given. Father thankful for the education and help. RN encouraged father to call the RN back if pain persisted and to follow up with pediatrician if he is still concerned. More
