What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)
  • Legally accessible - Available to researchers, media, and the general public under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)
  • Not protected health information - Once de-identified and published by the government, it's no longer covered by HIPAA restrictions

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

A 70-year-old female patient received BNT162b2 (BNT162B2), on 25Feb2021 as dose 1, single (Lot number: EN6205), in right arm and on 18Mar2021 as dose 2, single (Lot number: EP7534) at the age of 70 years, in right arm for covid-19 immunisation. The patient's relevant medical history included: "Illness: Arth" (ongoing), notes: Onset date: Child; So bad in hands, hurts to write. The patient took concomitant medications (do not remember) within 2 weeks prior to the event onset. Vaccination history included: Flu shot, for Immunization, reaction(s): "allergic", "sick/flu". The following information was reported: DRUG INEFFECTIVE (medically significant), COVID-19 (medically significant) all with onset 19Mar2021, outcome "recovered" (Mar2021) and all described as "Covid/ Extremely tired- fever 102 degree - body aches, can't breath properly - headache/sick for 3 to 4 days each time". Clinical course: she has had Covid-19 for 4x's. Every covid shot she received, she got covid. Extremely tired- fever 102 degree - body aches, can't breath properly - headache. Event onset reported as 19Mar2021 12hrs after shot. The patient refuse to get the flu shot & covid -vacs because she get so sick from them. The patient was so sick for 3 to 4 days each time. This adverse event did not require a visit to the Emergency room or a visit to a Physician's office. It hurt very badly getting the vaccine by the RN (it never has hurt in my 29 years) and when I went home my boyfriend (who is a Pharmacist) noticed how high the shot was given and honestly hours later it was throbbing... not normal vaccine pain but it was throbbing non stop and it has been like this for 6 months now. Directly after receiving vaccine, my shoulder muscle area was hot to the touch and red. I went to see medical provider that next Monday and a NP in the office said this in her notes: On exam, appreciable weakness, does not have full ROM on LUE, and tenderness throughout LUE above elbow but localized to lateral proximal aspect. No c/f cellulitis, abscess at this time, ddx includes bursitis v local inflammation, sending to ortho for consideration of steroid injection (i never went to ortho because I was stubborn at the time and felt that I shouldn't have to pay for what they did but im considering it now because im in severe pain still.) My left shoulder muscle is very tender, feels weak and when I drop my arm it feels like dead weight. I have a PT for spine because I have tight upper back muscles that cause my stiff neck but I swear they are NOT related. I have had neck pain for over a year now. My shoulder pain happened after the flu shot. If the shoulder was from the back muscles it would of happened to my right shoulder in which it didn't. I cannot lift my arm above my head. (So i guess not above 90๏ฟฝ?) I drop items because its incredibly weak. More
