What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

There were no issues while I was in the hospital, nor for 2 weeks after I was released. I got my 2nd Covid vaccine in my upper left arm (same as previous) and within an hour I was bleeding bright red out of my vagina. I went to my OB and they released me with bed rest. I spent the rest of the day laying on the couch with the worst abdominal pain I had ever felt. I was in and out of sleep during the day to alleviate the pain and my rising temperature. I tried to go to bed around 7PM so I wouldn't feel anymore pain--couldn't get comfortable and went to pee. After I came back to the bed, I immediately got up to pee again and my water broke on the floor. I managed to make my way to the bathroom across the apartment, squeezing my legs shut and dropping blood along the way. At one point I lost consciousness while on the toilet and looked around. My placenta was on the floor, and my baby ( just into her 2nd trimester) was hanging out of me into the toilet. My husband called an ambulance that got there in 2 minutes and by 8:40 I was on the way to the hospital... 12 hours exactly from when I got my shot to when I lost my 1st child. I'll never forgive nor forget Moderna, and the way this vaccine has been treated since its existence. There has been very little transparency and even LESS advisement for pregnant women to NOT take this vaccine when they're already getting others. More

After 24 hours from receiving the vaccine, the rash spread with red raised papules from her arm to her chest and face with no airway involvement. Parent took the patient to the emergency room and the rash had improved with benadryl. PCP advised Pt continue with daily zyrtec for 3-7 days. More

Pt denied any difficulty breathing. Pt was taken to patient room to lie down and given water and cold compress. DNP examined patient and performed vitals which DNP reported as normal. Pt was offered benadryl for the itch but patient denied stating she had to drive home and did not want to feel drowsy. Pt stayed in the patient room for 15 minutes. Pt was then re-accessed. Pt stated she was feeling better but still complained at the itchiness at the injection site. Pt states she felt well enough to drive home. DNP and this nurse advised patient to go directly home and take an antihistamine if the itchiness persist. It was difficult at times to determine when the onset of all of her symptoms started, but reports a few days after administration of her first series of vaccines (1/17/2025) she started experiencing pain at her injection sites, pain in her joints, and swelling in her joints. She also reports that it is painful to life her arms or touch her arms. There has been swelling in her bilateral posterior knees and bilateral elbows, which was present today. There has been swelling in her bilateral armpits as well, but this was not present today. The swelling can improve at times, but has not gone away completely. Pt had an appt with PCP and was administered the shingles vaccine at 9:08. She states she developed ... Pt had an appt with PCP and was administered the shingles vaccine at 9:08. She states she developed a HA and nausea by 11:00 am that lasted the remainder of the day. She woke up the next morning to red spots on her arms, chest and back and felt like her skin was on fire. She also has developed several random bruises on her arms. Her arm is still very painful at the injection site. She has tried cortisone cream and Benadryl with no relief. Pt denies SOB. Keep cool and well-hydrated. Start fexofenadine 180 daily x 1 week. Reviewed red flag signs and symptoms are possible allergic reactions. The patient appears to be comfortable with and have a good understanding of the explanation of the pathophysiology, red flag signs and symptoms, plan and agrees with it. There were no other questions. AVS declined. 25 minutes in records review, face to face patient interaction with history, physical exam, explanation of pathophysiology and treatment options, authorization of treatment and documentation.
