What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

In February 2022 I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism and just recently in October 2025 I was diagnosed with another pulmonary embolism. In February 2022 after the first pulmonary embolism I did a lot of testing to find out that there?s something wrong with my blood and I don?t know if this is from the Johnson & Johnson vaccine but it?s just seem to happen shortly after I received it. After reading that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was removed because of causing these types of situation. I now believe that this also is what has happened to me. I am now going to need to be on Eliquis for the rest of my life, which is a very expensive medication I believe that something should be done as a compensation to me for now causing me a life-threatening illness. I would really like to talk to somebody about this, and I would hope that somebody would be able to call me and let me know. I pray that I can stay healthy on this medication, but I am 65 years old so I?m very worried about this and it?s something I should not have had to worry about so I hope to hear from someone soon. After two weeks she was told that her cardiac numbers 35.5 and that she was at the point of having a stroke or heart attack. She had inflammation around her heart. Pt received the flu shot on 9/15/2025 on left deltoid. pt has no complaints after receiving vaccine.... Infomed pt he may have pain, tenderness at the injection site and he can take tylenol/ibuprofen to the area. If there is swelling it should subside. Pt comes into clinic today 11/6/25 stating that since the flu shot, he has intermittent "shocking" sensation of left thumb that radiates to forearm with driving or sitting . When asked initially if he had pain of left shoulder , he denied. Later he changes the history and said he has pain from left shoulder down ,NO numbness, NROM of left shoulder and thumb with all movements. No swelling of left thumb or shoulder. MA informed clinician pt has not been taking his psychiatric meds. Pt is a poor historian . He is difficult to understand due to thick accent, Explained to pt next plan of care is to refer to neurology for nerve conduction test. Pt declined. "I do not have the money." I want to file a claim." "I will take this to court." It was recommended to pt that imaging such as MRI can be done prior to neuro referral , pt declined and he left the clinic. pt mentioned at one point that there was bleeding at injection site. Pt was not clear whether it was after the injection or later. He would no answer question directly. He did not quanitfy the amount of bleeding. "I want to file a claim". This may be with reference with what is written in the VIS form for flu. pt never came in earlier to discuss the issue in clinic. Pt was in a irritated mood. She was able to talk and able to answer questions. Mother refused our offer to call for emergency services. We provided patient cold compress, placed it on the back of her neck. She threw up at this point. We then grabbed her a water and she passed out again for a few seconds. She remained lethargic for few minutes, then her skin color returned to normal.
