Important: This site is NOT affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the CDC, FDA, or any government agency. We are an independent service that makes public VAERS data easier to search and analyze.

What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)
  • Legally accessible - Available to researchers, media, and the general public under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)
  • Not protected health information - Once de-identified and published by the government, it's no longer covered by HIPAA restrictions

Why does this site exist?

All data is downloaded directly from the official CDC/FDA VAERS website at vaers.hhs.gov/data.

The data is:

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

  • ✅ Monitored by CDC/FDA experts who investigate concerning patterns

Limitations:

  • ⚠️ Underreporting - not all adverse events are reported
  • ⚠️ Overreporting - coincidental events may be reported
  • ⚠️ Incomplete data - not all fields are required

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Where can I learn more?

She was treated with topical triamcinolone cream. While her rash has completely resolved, she now has significant post-inflammatory skin changes. Of note, patient developed an unexplained pulmonary embolism in May of 2025. While we cannot say with certainty that this was secondary to Shingrix injection and while I did not see her for her embolism (she went to the emergency room for this), she had no other pre-disposing factors and no other explainable etiology for her embolism. This visit was for twins, and two Influenza vaccines and two Hepatitis A vaccines were drawn up in preparation. During administration, the medical assistants inadvertently administered two Influenza vaccines to one twin instead of one Influenza and one Hepatitis A vaccine. The error was identified immediately after administration, and the provider was notified promptly. The second sibling did not receive any vaccines at that time. Poison Control was contacted and provided with all relevant information, including vaccine types and doses administered. Poison Control advised that no serious adverse effects were expected and that the patient might only experience local soreness at the injection site. The parent was notified of the error. Nurse laid patient flat on exam table and alerted nearby staff. Ice pack applied to patients neck and vitals machine brought into room. Patient able to speak and answer questions. Nurse monitored patient for some time before sitting patient up half way and giving patient some juice. Patient drank the juice and started to feel light headed again and syncoped a second time. Patient laid back down and Dr called to room. Patient placed on some oxygen and remained laying flat for 15 minutes. Patient speaking in full sentences and vitals monitored. Our pharmacy technician, spoke to the patient first, then she put the patient on hold, and I spoke to the patient directly. The patient relayed the same information to both the technician and the pharmcist. The patient stated that she since receiving the shot, her arm has remained very sore. She further explained that she has been unable to lift her arm since the day she received the shot. She then told me that she went to her doctor, who told her the shot was "given too high". When I asked how the doctor verified that (i.e. was this statement made based on bandaid placement, visual of the blood or puncture site), she said that "the doctor could not see anything," but made this assumption based on symptoms. She further stated that "the shot was injected into something it shouldn't have been injected to and that caused her to tear her rotator cuff and the imaging I've received showed this" She went on to state that she wants "Pharmacy to cover my medical expenses for this." RN first administered Flu and Tdap in the left arm; patient tolerated well. RN then administered Hepatitis B and Polio in the right arm; patient appeared uneasy. RN asked patient if she would like some water and patient agreed. RN went to get water for patient and patient was talking to her sister in law. Patient's sister in law then said, "I think she fainted." RN walked back into room to see patient sitting in chair with head back and unresponsive; respirations were visible and palpated pulse was strong. RN used ammonia inhalant to wake patient; patient awakened initially confused; but quickly became AAOx4. Patient was cold and clammy. RN checked BP 117/90 and HR 81. SaO2 97%. Brought patient ice pack for forehead and apple juice. Patient finished apple juice and stated that she was feeling much better. Patient continued talking to RN and her sister in law. Proceeded with patient's blood draw which patient tolerated well. Patient stayed for an additional 30 minutes from vaccine administration with no other symptoms noted or reported. Discussed follow up with ER if difficulty breathing, hives, or additional syncope; discussed following up with PCP if needed. More
