What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)
  • Legally accessible - Available to researchers, media, and the general public under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)
  • Not protected health information - Once de-identified and published by the government, it's no longer covered by HIPAA restrictions

All data is downloaded directly from the official CDC/FDA VAERS website at vaers.hhs.gov/data.

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

  • ✅ Monitored by CDC/FDA experts who investigate concerning patterns

Limitations:

  • ⚠️ Overreporting - coincidental events may be reported
  • ⚠️ Incomplete data - not all fields are required

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

Where can I learn more?

I had connected with travel provider 4/11/25 and patient got a response/update 4/11/25 from provider care team, reporting to have her see Primary Care Provider for symptoms. Patient did get an Ortho referral placed 4/10/25. Patient got in with family practice 4/14/25 to get her symptoms checked out. 4/14/25 visit with family practice encounter has photo of the bullae with erythema that formed at injection site. Dermatology was consulted at this time and antibiotics prescribed. Culture of bullae collected at 4/15/25 office visit with family practice. E-consult to ID submitted 4/15/25 by family practice. ID responded 4/15/25 to e consult with antibiotic recommendations. Patient was called 4/17/25 and updated that culture was negative. 6/13/25 visit with family practice, xray and MR L shoulder ordered. Xray completed 6/13/25 and MRI completed 6/27/25. Patient was updated that MRI results "subdeltoid bursitis, but otherwise is normal" on 6/30/25. Patient was seen at family practice 6/27/25, "Follow-up Shoulder pain extending to neck from tdap vaccine. Hot/cold packs and lidocaine patches help. Keeps pt up at night." This case involves a 4 months old male patient whose leg was burning hot, stools smell way different from before, like chemical smell., right thigh was red, leg turned really red, from the middle of thigh, where the vaccine (Diphtheria-15/Tetanus/5 AC Pertussis Vaccine [Daptacel]) was administered all the way to the toe. like it was burned with boiling water., only red dots were observed all over the leg, started to swell and screamed crying. The patient's past medical history, medical treatment(s), vaccination(s) and family history were not provided. On 26-Jun-2025, the patient received a dose 2 of suspect Diphtheria-15/Tetanus/5 AC Pertussis Vaccine (Strength = standard) Suspension for injection 1X(Once) (batch number and expiry date unknown) via intramuscular route in unknown administration site for immunization. Information on batch number and expiry date corresponding to the one at time of event occurrence was requested. On 26-JUN-2025 the patient screamed crying (crying) (latency 2 to 3 hours) and leg was burning hot (burning sensation), right thigh was red, leg turned really red, from the middle of thigh, where the vaccine was administered all the way to the toe. like it was burned with boiling water., only red dots were observed all over the leg (erythema), started to swell (peripheral swelling) (latency same day). On an unknown date in Jun 2025 the patient's stools smell way different from before, like chemical smell. (abnormal faeces), (latency few days approximately). Reportedly, Within 2 minutes of picking the patient up, the leg turned really red, from the middle of thigh, Within 5 minutes, parents got to a pediatrician. Per family, went to sit on chair and lost consciousness, family member was able to keep her in chair. RN observed her slumped over in chair. Other RNs were able to move her to the ground and elevate her legs using the chair. Vitals were obtained once she was positioned to her back on the ground. Initially, systolic was in 90's, diastolic was in 40's and pulse rate was 48 beats per minute using finger probe. Carotid pulse was slow but strong to palpation. Fan and cool rags were used to help stablize client. Client started to regain consciousness by opening her eyes. BP and pulse were rechecked, improved: 112/72 and pulse rate 70 bpm. Once client was able, staff assisted her to a sitting position and then helped her the chair and elevated her legs. Client had not ate or drank anything. Client was given a sugary snack to suck on once more alert and water provided. Family and staff remained at her side for 30 minutes until he was stable enough to walk to vehicle assisted by staff and family. Reassured family that this is a possible response to receiving injections. Will make a note on chart for when client returns for 2nd hpv immunization. Plan to recline client with legs elevated next visit and encouraged eating a snack or meal before injections. More
