Important: This site is NOT affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the CDC, FDA, or any government agency. We are an independent service that makes public VAERS data easier to search and analyze.

What is VAERS?

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) is a national early warning system established in 1990 to detect possible safety problems with vaccines. It's co-managed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

VAERS accepts and analyzes reports of adverse events (possible side effects) after a person has received a vaccination.

Is this data HIPAA compliant?

Yes, absolutely. All VAERS data displayed here is:

  • Publicly available - Published by the CDC/FDA on their official website
  • De-identified - Contains no personally identifiable information (names, addresses, contact info removed)
  • Legally accessible - Available to researchers, media, and the general public under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act)
  • Not protected health information - Once de-identified and published by the government, it's no longer covered by HIPAA restrictions

All data is downloaded directly from the official CDC/FDA VAERS website at vaers.hhs.gov/data.

The data is:

My vaccine lot number matches one with deaths/serious events - should I be worried?

Important context:

  • VAERS reports do NOT prove causation - A report means an event occurred after vaccination, but doesn't mean the vaccine caused it
  • Anyone can report - Reports are not verified for medical accuracy before being published
  • Coincidences happen - When millions of people get vaccinated, some will experience unrelated medical events afterward
  • Large lot numbers - Popular vaccines may have hundreds of thousands of doses from one lot number
  • More vaccinations = more reports - Lots used widely will naturally have more reports

What to do:

  • Don't panic - VAERS data requires expert analysis to interpret
  • Talk to your doctor if you have concerns
  • Check official CDC/FDA safety communications for genuine safety signals
  • Remember: billions of vaccine doses have been safely administered

Can I trust VAERS data?

VAERS is valuable but has limitations:

Strengths:

  • ✅ Monitored by CDC/FDA experts who investigate concerning patterns

Limitations:

  • ⚠️ Underreporting - not all adverse events are reported
  • ⚠️ Overreporting - coincidental events may be reported
  • ⚠️ Incomplete data - not all fields are required

Bottom line: VAERS is an important tool for safety monitoring, but individual reports should not be used as proof that a vaccine caused harm.

What are "adverse events"?

An adverse event is any undesirable health occurrence that happens after vaccination, including:

  • Common reactions: Sore arm, mild fever, fatigue (usually expected)
  • Serious events: Hospitalization, disability, life-threatening illness, death
  • Coincidental events: Medical conditions that would have occurred anyway

Important: An adverse event doesn't mean the vaccine caused it - only that it occurred after vaccination. Many reported events are coincidental or unrelated.

Why are some lot numbers listed multiple times?

This is normal and expected! A person may receive multiple doses of the same vaccine from the same lot number:

  • COVID vaccines require 2-3 doses
  • HPV, Hepatitis B, and other vaccines have multi-dose schedules
  • Each dose is recorded as a separate entry

Example: Person receives Pfizer COVID dose 1 (lot ABC123) and dose 2 (lot ABC123) - lot ABC123 appears twice in their report.

How often is this data updated?

The CDC/FDA releases new VAERS data every Friday. This site is typically updated:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly for recent data
  • Check the available years to see what data is currently loaded
  • During updates, the site may be in maintenance mode temporarily

The patient was supposed to get his second MCV4 and his first MenB vaccines. His sister was in the ... The patient was supposed to get his second MCV4 and his first MenB vaccines. His sister was in the room as well and she was supposed to be getting her second HPV vaccine. The MA didn't properly verify which vaccines she had picked up to administer as she just glanced at them, and she saw what she expected to be giving but her mind didn't actually register that what she picked up wasn't the correct two to be given. So, the patient was given MCV4 and HPV instead. As the MA was going to throw away the used syringes she noticed that the color of the vaccine was different than it should have been. Then after looking at the remaining vaccine she realized that she had given the wrong vaccine to the pt. After this realization the MA immediately went to get another dose of the HPV and then told the male patients' Provider what had happened. After informing the Provider what happened the two went to the Chief Medical Officer to inform them of what had occurred. After informing the CMO the two went to inform the parent and the patients of the sequence of events and that there would be no adverse reactions to the pt receiving another dose of HPV, it would be like another booster, but that he would still need to get his MenB vaccine as well. So instead of the original two vaccines he received three. More

ADVERSE REACTION RECEIVED AFTER RECEIVING THE PFIZER VACCINE ON APRIL 15, 2021 FACILITY RECEIVED VACCINE: FACILITY FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION 6 DAYS AFTER VACCINE GIVE: CLINIC My daughter, said she and her 18-year-old son, waited 15 minutes after the Pfizer vaccine was given and felt fine. However, while riding home, she felt itchy and tingly then and for several days, especially on her back but never asked anyone to look to see if there was a rash. Her arm and shoulder were sore after the shot, but didn't notice any redness. However on Wednesday, April the 21st (6 days after receiving the vaccine) she noticed a rash on her back and side with burning. The rash was on her right side for both. She went to the assigned Family Health Clinic where they were assigned for health issues. This facility does not give the Covid Vaccine, the reason she went to the above facility mentioned for the vaccine. She saw a physician, who said it was the Shingles but no relation to the vaccine, and ordered Valtrex. And said she can take the 2nd dose. Since I am an RN and also a retired Public Health nurse, I believe this should have been reported by this physician via VAERS. This is a NEW vaccine and for a patient (50 years of age, Very healthy, with no weight or health issues prior to taking this vaccine) to present six a days later with six days later with Shingles is highly suspicious. Plus, I have read that Shingles has been reported with this vaccine. Your DATA base is important to collect information as this reaction. As this Physician should be well educated. I had a problem with completing the VAERS form on line as it kept "kicking me out" which may be a turn off of its completion. And a concern that Physician right off said to take the second dose. When my daughter returns to take the 2nd dose, and I'm hoping that she will, I've stressed to her to inform the RN of the experience she had after leaving the site, plus her episode of Shingles. He had slight redness, and the heavy feeling grew more prominent on 03/25/2025 and 03/26/2025. On 03/27/2025, a rash on the injection site and shoulder appeared and grew rapidly over the next few days. As of 03/31/2025 (today) the rash appears on the entire right back upper shoulder, the front shoulder area to the right neck, and down the entire right arm. There is also several large lumps under the right breast. The rash appears as red lumps, and symptoms at this time is severe itchiness. Patient has been advised to take Benadryl at this time, and report any worsening of symptoms. More

In the ED, she tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted for acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 (SpO2 improved to mid-90s on 2 L nasal cannula) and COPD exacerbation. CXR was largely unremarkable. CT thorax taken due to right back/flank pain showed cholelithiasis, cirrhosis, and bilateral kidney lesions/scarring. Superimposed bacterial infection less likely due to low procal 0.07, WBC wnl. She was also found to be in hypertensive urgency secondary to medication non-compliance as she reported not taking her anti-hypertensive meds for the past 2 weeks. Home blood pressure medication including Norvasc, lisinopril, and hydrochlorothiazide were restarted and labetalol was provided as needed during admission. By this morning, she was breathing comfortably on room air and endorsed improvement in her cough, work of breathing, and appetite. Right lower back pain is most likely musculoskeletal in nature. Discharge to home in stable condition on 3/25/25.
